Der zweite ist ein Aulet. Der dritte trägt einen kleinen Zweig und der letzte schliesslich eine Palmettenranke. B: Opferbankett: Vier Männer auf zwei hölzernen Klinen mit Phiale, Skyphos und Kantharos, sowie zwei Diener mit Kannen und ein Flötenspieler. Rechts am Rand steht ein Krater. Auf der dritten Seite ist ein Komos von fünf tanzenden Männern hinter einem Flötenspieler abgebildet. Auf den drei Beinen: enthauptete Medusa, zwei Gorgonen und der fliehende Perseus mit Kibisis; darunter ringende, boxende und Diskus werfende Athleten.

Description: frieze, relief – Material: marble – Dating: -440 – Discovery: AthensAcropolis – Description: One hundred and sixty meters of low relief sculpture, c. 1 meter high, set as the crown of the outside of the cella wall, just below the ceiling of the colonnade. The west frieze depicts the preparation of horsemen. On the north and south friezes are ranks of horsemen, charioteers and apobatai (altogether 21 chariots), older men (perhaps thallophoroi), musicians (auletai and kitharoidoi), hydriaphoroi, skaphephoroi and sacrificial animals (sheep and cows on the north, only cows on the south). The east frieze features women carrying sacrificial implements (kistai, thymiateria, phialai, oinochoai), magistrates and elders (perhaps the eponymous heroes of Athens), the Olympian gods, and the unfolding of a ritual garment. Although interpretation is much debated, that first suggested by Stuart and Revett – that the frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession – is most likely.

The east frieze features women carrying sacrificial implements (kistai, thymiateria, phialai, oinochoai), magistrates and elders (perhaps the eponymous heroes of Athens), the Olympian gods, and the unfolding of a ritual garment. Although interpretation is much debated, that first suggested by Stuart and Revett – that the frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession – is most likely.

Description: frieze, relief – Material: marble – Dating: -440 – Discovery: AthensAcropolis – Description: One hundred and sixty meters of low relief sculpture, c. 1 meter high, set as the crown of the outside of the cella wall, just below the ceiling of the colonnade. The west frieze depicts the preparation of horsemen. On the north and south friezes are ranks of horsemen, charioteers and apobatai (altogether 21 chariots), older men (perhaps thallophoroi), musicians (auletai and kitharoidoi), hydriaphoroi, skaphephoroi and sacrificial animals (sheep and cows on the north, only cows on the south). The east frieze features women carrying sacrificial implements (kistai, thymiateria, phialai, oinochoai), magistrates and elders (perhaps the eponymous heroes of Athens), the Olympian gods, and the unfolding of a ritual garment. Although interpretation is much debated, that first suggested by Stuart and Revett – that the frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession – is most likely.
