Description: crater: bell crater, vase painting, red figured, Attica – Material: terracotta – Artist: Pourtalès Painter – Dating: -360/-340 – Discovery: Sant’Agata de’ Goti – Description: Dargestellt wird die Initiation des Herakles und der Dioskuren in die eleusinischen Mysterien. Demeter, Kore, Triptolemos, eleusinisches Kultpersonal. Das Heiligtum von Eleusis wird gekennzeichnet durch ein hinten befindliches Gebäude: Geländelinie, dahinter oberer Teil von vier dorischen Säulen mit Architrav. Weiter links noch zwei einzelne, ebenfalls verkürzte Säulen. In der Mitte Demeter, Kore und Triptolemos auf dem Flügelwagen, zu Füssen der Mittelgruppe zwei Bakchosringe. Von links kommt Herakles mit Bakchos und Keule, in der oberen Bildhälfte ganz rechts und links die Dioskuren ebenfalls mit Bakchoi.

Description: crater, vase painting, Attica – Material: terracotta – Dating: -760/-735 – Discovery: Attica – Description: Prothesis in zwei Ebenen, oben der Verstorbene (Amarynkeus) flankiert von einer sitzenden Trauernden und einer kleinen stehenden Figur (ein Sohn?), unten Trauernde auf Hockern sitzend mit erhobenen Armen. Von links nähern sich weitere Klagefrauen, in der Szene rechts ein Zug von Kriegern mit toten Tieren zur Bahre. Die Krieger tragen Schwert und Dolch (machaira) mit Ausnahme des 5. bis 7. Kriegers. Der 6. und 7. halten eine Reihe toter Vögel und in ihrer Rechten einen länglichen Gegenstand, der ein Messer mit breiter Klinge sein könnte. Ganz rechts folgt das mythische Doppelwesen Aktorione. Auf der Rückseite ist ein Dreifuss, ein Krieger und ein Wesen mit zwei behelmten Köpfen sowie vier Armen und Beinen. In einer unteren Zone Wagenrennen. Identifiziert werden kann die Szene anhand der Präsenz des Doppelwesens Aktorione, das laut Homer bei den Leichenspielen des Königs Amarynkeus gegen Nestor antrat (Il. 23, 638–642). – Dimensions: H: 1,3 m; Dm Mund: 0,825 m
