Description: votive relief, relief – Material: marble – Dating: -400/-350 – Discovery: AthensAsclepieion – Description: On the l. are the Eleusinian deities: Persephone, in a peplos and himation, stands holding two long torches. In front of her Demeter sits on a cista mystica. Then stands Asklepios, in a himation that leaves his chest bare, with r. hand on hip, leaning a staff originally added in paint. The gods are approached by six male figures wearing himatia. Below, carved in shallow relief, are five olive wreaths inscribed with the names and patronymics of famous physicians honored by the city of Athens; three of the names, without patronymics, are also inscribed on the epistyle.
